Business
The export-oriented agricultural sector is decisive for the economic structure, even if tourism has meanwhile developed into the main source of foreign exchange. With a gross national income (GNI) of (2018) US $ 4,470 per resident, Belize is one of the low to middle income countries. However, around 41% of the population live below the poverty line. The economy grew steadily until 2007, but the economy depends to a large extent on the development of world market prices for agricultural export products. The government is therefore trying, inter alia, to through the approval of offshore financial services and the introduction of export-oriented production zones to diversify the economy. Since 2006 crude oil exported. At present, agriculture and forestry including fisheries generate 15.5% of the gross domestic product (GDP), the manufacturing industry including mining and construction 18.6% and the service sector 65.9%. The external debt in 2014 was 66.3% of GDP.
Foreign trade: The trade balance is still negative (2015 exports: US $ 0.3 billion, imports: US $ 1.0 billion). It can only be partially offset by income from tourism and remittances from Belizeans living abroad. The most important export goods are crude oil, sugar, bananas, citrus fruits, fish and fish products (especially crustaceans and shellfish). The main trading partners are the USA, China, Mexico and the UK.
Agriculture
Around 23% of the workforce is employed in the agricultural sector. The mostly foreign-owned plantations are used to grow sugar cane (2014: 1.21 million t), citrus fruits and bananas for export. For the local market, mainly red beans, corn, tubers and rice come from smallholder production.
