Country Abbreviations
BRA is the three-letter country code of Brazil, and BR is the two-letter country code of Brazil. The two-letter suffix is used in top-level domains on the Internet as .br.
Most of the country is occupied by the Brazilian mountainous country, which reaches its greatest heights in the southeast and breaks off there with a steep drop to the Atlantic coast. To the south and south-west it is mainly formed as stepland and merges as hill country into the coastal lowlands bordered by large harbors and the inland lowlands of the La Plata river system.
Inland to the north, it gradually descends with extensive plateaus (Planaltos, Chapadas) to the Amazon lowlands (Amazonia).
In the far north, Brazil has a share in the mountainous country of Guayana, a rump mountain range with wide plateaus and isolated island mountains, which slopes steeply to the Amazon lowlands and resembles the Brazilian mountainous country both geologically and in relief. Here on the border with Venezuela, Pico da Neblina (2,994 m above sea level) rises the highest mountain in Brazil.
The entire north of the country belongs to the Amazon river basin, the south with the upper reaches of Paraguay, Paraná and Uruguay to the La Plata system, the east to smaller river systems that flow directly into the Atlantic (Rio São Francisco, Rio Parnaíba). Most of the rivers are rich in water, but (with the exception of the Amazon), due to the many rapids, even in the lower reaches are hardly navigable. Significant waterfalls are the Iguaçu Falls (60–80 m) on the Argentine border and the Paulo Afonso Falls (84 m) on the Rio São Francisco.
