Country Abbreviations
FRA is the three-letter country code of France, and FR is the two-letter country code of France. The two-letter suffix is used in top-level domains on the Internet as .fr.
France stretches from the English Channel in the northwest to the Mediterranean in the south. The border with Spain runs on the Pyrenees. In the Alps in the southeast, Montblanc on the border with Italy is the highest mountain in the country (4810 m). Spacious flat to hilly landscapes are the Paris Basin in the northeast, through which the Seine flows, and the Aquitaine Basin in the southwest. The deciduous and mixed deciduous forests that were predominant in the past have largely fallen victim to human cultivation.
The Brittany and Normandy project in the northwest as peninsulas in the Atlantic. The Loire is the longest river in France. It rises in the Massif Central, an extensive low mountain range (up to 1886 m), partly cut by canyons, and flows in a large arc to the Atlantic. The Saône and Rhône flow in a long north-south depression. Before it flows into the Mediterranean, the Rhône forms a large delta: the Camargue. Wild horses and flamingos live there. The western Alps extend to the Mediterranean coast, which are rocky in Provence and form lagoons in Languedoc.
There are many seaside resorts on the Riviera in the southeast. The 200 km long Atlantic coast in the southwest is accompanied by a wide belt of dunes with beach lakes.
The climate is largely shaped by the Atlantic. Rain falls all year round. The summers are warm, the Mediterranean is hot and dry, and the winters are mild.
