National symbols
The national flag is horizontally striped in red over white. It goes back to the kingdom of Majapahit, which ruled the Indonesian islands in the 13th century. In the 20th century it was hoisted as an expression of nationalism in the fight against the Dutch and became the national flag in 1945. Red stands for life on earth, white symbolizes the soul and spiritual life. Together the colors symbolize the unity of body and mind. – The coat of arms, established on February 11, 1950, shows in front of a golden eagle (Garuda) a shield quartered in red and silver with a black heart shield. The shield fields show the head of a Banteng (Asian forehead cattle; first field), a beringin tree (shape of the Indian fig tree; second field), rice ear and cotton twig in the third and a gold chain in the fourth. The reinforced shield dividing line symbolizes the equator. The four shield fields and the five-pointed golden star in the heart shield symbolize the five state principles (pancasila). The 17 feathers each of the wings, the 8 tail feathers and the 45 fields of the neck plumage of the Garuda stand for August 17, 1945 (date of independence). In his clutches the Garuda holds a banner with the motto »Bhinneka tunggal ika« (unity in diversity). The Garuda is considered to be the bird of the god Vishnu. Today it stands for the creative power and the work of the people. 1945 (date of independence). In his clutches the Garuda holds a banner with the motto »Bhinneka tunggal ika« (unity in diversity).
