Country Abbreviations

JPN is the three-letter country code of Japan, and JP is the two-letter country code of Japan. The two-letter suffix is used in top-level domains on the Internet as .jp.

Service

Japan is on the way to becoming a service society. The share of the service sector in GDP reached 68.8% in 2016; the share of employees was 70.9%. However, a distinction must be made here: the increase is particularly high in corporate and personal services, whereas it stagnates at a high level in retail and falls in the financial sector. The latter can be traced back to the crisis in the financial sector, which in the late 1990s led to the collapse of banks, insurers and securities firms as well as to consolidation, which in turn was accompanied by downsizing.

Tourism: Japan is experiencing a considerable boom in terms of the number of foreign visitors. In 2017, 28.7 million tourists visited the country; 25.6% of this came from China, followed by South Korea (24.9%) and Taiwan (15.9%). The majority of tourists visit the main island of Honshu with the cities of Tokyo, Osaka and Nagoya.
