History
Vietnam was from 111 BC. until 939 AD a Chinese province, then an independent empire. It was occupied by France in the 19th century and was part of French Indochina. In 1945 the communist Ho Chi Minh proclaimed independence. After long struggles for independence (Vietnam War) in 1954 the Viet Minh, China and the Soviet Union as well as Great Britain, the USA and France divided Vietnam into two parts along the 17th parallel. The communists ruled North Vietnam and French troops remained stationed in South Vietnam. In 1957, communist guerrillas controlled from the north attacked in the south. The United States intervened in the Vietnam War. The war ended in 1975 with the victory of the communists. In 1976 the country was reunited as a socialist republic.
After the communist system in the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991, Vietnam’s rulers clung to communist party rule. But they introduced market economy structures. With the settlement of foreign industrial companies, Vietnam achieved high growth rates from the 1990s onwards. In 1995 the country resumed diplomatic relations with the United States.
Culture
In the shadow of foreign rule, wars and the division of the country (1954-76), the Vietnamese have produced a lively folk culture. In almost every household there is a family altar where the ancestors are venerated and offerings are made on feast days. Vietnam is particularly known for a kind of marionette theater on the water, in which wooden marionette puppets appear in rivers and ponds just above the surface of the water.
Many Chinese influences can be found in art and literature. There are many old Vietnamese fairy tales, sagas and fables. Western music has established itself in modern music. You Tube is the main distribution forum for music. Karaoke singing is very popular.
In their free time, many Vietnamese play soccer or badminton, and many also practice Asian martial arts. However, there are seldom professional athletes.
