National symbols

The national flag was introduced in its current form on September 30, 1960. The island of Cyprus floats in the middle in yellow in the white cloth, underneath two crossed olive branches. The flag symbolizes the desire for reconciliation between the Greek and Turkish population groups.

The northern part introduced its own flag in 1983: parallel to the upper and lower edge, narrow red stripes in the white cloth delimit a field in which there is a red crescent moon and a five-pointed red star.

On a golden shield surrounded by olive leaves, the coat of arms shows a white dove with a green olive branch in its beak, including the year 1960, which commemorates the year of independence. – The internationally not recognized northern part modified the coat of arms after its unilateral declaration of independence: The number 1960 was removed and an upper coat of arms made of a silver rising crescent moon with a five-pointed silver star and the year 1983 was inserted on the upper edge of the shield.

National holiday: October 1st commemorates the proclamation of the Republic of Cyprus in 1960.
