More about Ireland

The Irish Republic is a parliamentary democracy and occupies about five sixths of the island of Ireland in northwestern Europe. The island state includes the main island and numerous smaller and larger islands. The government and parliament are based in the capital city of Dublin. The warm North Atlantic current creates a temperate maritime climate with mild winters, not too hot summers and year-round high humidity. Ireland’s flora and fauna are less biodiverse than other European countries. There are no larger natural forests, but for climatic reasons there are lush bushes and flowers as well as many mosses and lichens. Over 82% of the population is Irish.

The official languages are the predominantly spoken English and Irish Gaelic. Massive emigration, especially as a result of the Great Famine of 1845–49, resulted in millions of people of Irish descent living around the world. Today the population is growing continuously due to the comparatively high birth rates and the influx of skilled workers. Almost 80% are Roman Catholic. Belonging to religion and the clashes between English and Scottish-born Protestants and Irish Catholics influenced the history of the island for centuries and culminated in the civil war in Northern Ireland in the second half of the 20th century (Northern Ireland conflict). The influence of the Catholic Church on politics and society is still great, but is gradually being repressed in some areas. Founded in 1916, the Irish Republic was only realized with parliamentary elections in 1921, after Ireland had been divided in 1920 and Southern Ireland came into being. The economy is strongly export-oriented. A number of foreign companies have settled in Ireland because of low corporate taxes, including tech companies such as Amazon, Apple, Facebook, Google, Twitter. The gross domestic product per capita is among the highest in the EU. After a depression as a result of the global financial crisis In 2009 Ireland recovered relatively quickly. But Brexit makes access to the important British market and transit to continental Europe more difficult. Ireland has been a member of the EU since 1973 and belongs to the euro zone, but not to the Schengen area. Ireland pursues a strict policy of neutrality and is not a member of NATO.
