More about Jordan
History
From September 2014 the Jordanian army participated in air strikes against positions of the terrorist network Islamic State (IS) in Syria. In February 2015, ISIS published a video showing the gruesome murder of a Jordanian military pilot who was captured in December 2014. The Jordanian Air Force then carried out a major attack on ISIS targets. From March 2015, the Air Force also participated in attacks against the Houthi militias in Yemen. In spring 2016, parliament decided to strengthen the constitutional powers of the king, who was granted the sole right to appoint the heads of the judiciary and security forces. As a result of the civil war in Syria, the number of people who fled the neighboring country to Jordan rose sharply. In the summer of 2016 there were around 650,000 registered Syrian refugees in Jordan. After the King had dissolved Parliament on May 29, 2016, Early new elections were held on September 20, 2016. They took place on the basis of a new electoral law passed in March 2016, which introduced open proportional lists at the level of 23 electoral districts and thus took into account reform wishes of the opposition. Therefore, for the first time since 2007, the Islamic Action Front, the political arm of the Muslim Brotherhood, took part in the elections again. The “National Coalition for Reform” alliance it formed won 15 of the 130 mandates. The dominance of the traditional elites loyal to the king in parliament was largely retained. On September 29, 2016, the King appointed 65 new members to the Senate. After the resignation of the Prime Minister Hani al-Mulki, triggered by nationwide protests after public austerity measures, appointed King Abdullah II on June 5th. 2018 Omar al-Razzaz as the new Prime Minister.
