Geography

Location

Nauru is an upscale coral island, surrounded by a coral reef that dries up at low tide, and fringed by a sandy beach that turns into a 150-300 m wide belt of agriculturally usable soil. Behind it rises an average 30 m, maximum 61 m high central uninhabited plateau. This consists of sterile coral limestone with a deeply torn surface as a result of phosphate degradation. The degraded calcium phosphate (raw material for mineral fertilizers) was created by the penetration of phosphoric acid components (with rain and sea water) from deposited bird excrement (guano) into the coral limestone and its chemical transformation. In the southwest of the plateau there is a shallow lake that provides drinking water: the Buadalagune. There are no watercourses and no natural harbors due to the closed coral reef.

Climate and vegetation

Nauru has a tropical climate (average temperatures 24–34 ° C), which is bearable by the cool sea winds. The amount of precipitation varies considerably from year to year: from 300 to 4,500 mm / year. Most of the precipitation falls between November and February. The natural vegetation mainly includes coconut palms and pandanus trees. Against the background of global climate change, Nauru is threatened by a possible rise in sea level.
