More about Nepal

Nepalese literature

Nepalese literature, Nepalese literature. The beginnings of Nepalese literature in the 19th century are based in their genres, style and materials closely on the literature of classical India; The editing of the old epic »Ramayana« by Bhanubhakta (* 1814, † 1868) and the extensive journalistic activities of Motiram Bhatta (* 1866, † 1912) were influential.

Clear influences of Western literature can be seen after 1930, first in literary journals, which played a decisive role in the development of a reading public (e.g. in »Sharada«, 1932–52). The poems of Lekhnath Paudyal (* 1884, † 1965) mediate between tradition and modernity in genre and style. The poems and stories of Lakshmi Prasad Devkota (* 1909, † 1959) are shaped by individual imagination who, following the example of the English romantics, create literary themes from everyday life. Since the middle of the 20th century, all forms of European literature have been experimented with, with poems and essays taking up a large part and often social issues and problems of westernization being thematized. For the first time women are among the outstanding representatives of this new literature, among others. Bishnu Kumari Waiba (* 1937, † 1993; better known under the name Prijat) and Banira Giri (* 1946).

Nepal as a constitutional monarchy

Under the leadership of some left-wing splinter groups and later also the NC, v. a. Democracy efforts in the cities of the Kathmandu valley. In February 1990 the NC founded a democracy movement together with an alliance of seven communist parties; After bloody unrest, the king dissolved the Panchayat system in April 1990, declared a return to multi-party democracy under a constitutional monarchy, which was enshrined in the constitution of November 9, 1990, and set up a transitional government under Prime Minister Krishna Prasad Bhattarai (* 1924; NC) a. The NC won the May 1991 elections; he posed with Girija Prasad Koirala the Prime Minister (until 1994). The new elections on November 15, 1994 were in favor of the Communist Party of Nepal – Unified Marxist-Leninist (CPN – UML), but none of the parties achieved an absolute majority of the seats. Initially, the chairman of the CPN-UML, Man Mohan Adhikari (* 1920, † 1999), formed a minority government and was sworn in on November 30th as the first communist prime minister of a monarchy. After being overthrown by a vote of no confidence on September 10, 1995, Sher Bahadur Deuba (* 1946; NC) formed a coalition government.
