More about Slovakia
The Slovak Republic is a relatively small landlocked country in eastern central Europe. The largest city in the country is the capital Bratislava. In the south and east there are lowland areas. The wooded Carpathians (Karpaty) cover large parts of the country; the highest mountain range is the High Tatras (Vysoké Tatry). The highest mountain is the Gerlsdorfer peak (Gerlachovský štít, 2655 m), the longest river Waag (Vah, 403 km). There is a moderate continental climate. The population is made up of 81% Slovaks and 9% Hungarians, small ethnic minorities include Germans, Poles, Czechs, Ukrainians. The Roma population is estimated at 7–11%. The official language Slovak is closely related to Czech, one fifth of the population in the south of the country speaks Hungarian. The majority of the Slovaks profess Christianity, two thirds are Catholic, and 13% do not belong to any denomination. Regional differences in educational level, housing, economic power and income characterize the country. The culture of Slovakia has grown together from authentic Slovak traditions and the influences of the Czech, Hungarian and other cultures of this region. After the dissolution of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy, Slovakia became part of the newly founded Czechoslovakia in 1918. In 1939, under German pressure, the independent Slovak Republic was proclaimed. After 1945 the country was again part of the Czechoslovak state and remained so until the bloodless overthrow of the communist regime of the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic in the Velvet Revolution of 1989. The Slovak Republic was established in 1993 as an independent state. The automotive industry is the backbone of what is now a relatively highly industrialized, export-oriented economy compared to the former agricultural state. Most of the export goes to countries in the European Union, especially Germany, the Czech Republic and Poland. The state has been a member of the EU since 2004 and part of the euro zone since 2009.
