Solomon Islands, officially English Solomon Islands [ s ɔ ləmən a ɪ ləndz], state in the western Pacific, with (2019) 669 800 residents; The capital is Honiara.

Population
Around 95% of the population are Melanesians, around 3% are Polynesians, 1% are Micronesians; Europeans and Chinese also live on the islands. There are over 100 Melanesian and Polynesian languages, the colloquial language is Pidgine English. The population distribution of the Solomon Islands, which with 22 residents per km 2 (2017) is one of the most sparsely inhabited regions of the South Pacific, shows great differences. About two thirds of the population live on the islands of Guadalcanal, Malaita and on the western archipelago around the island of New Georgia (Western Province). Arrested in traditional family or clan groups, the majority of the islanders live in the countryside. The proportion of the urban population is only 23% (2017). The largest city of Honiara, was created after 1945 as a replacement for the former capital Tulagi (on the island of the same name), which was destroyed in the war.
Social: The health system is still patchy. On average, there are 0.2 doctors and 1.4 hospital beds for every 1,000 residents.
Religion
The constitution guarantees freedom of religion; all religious communities are legally equal. – Over 90% of the population are Christians: 32–35% belong to the Anglican Church (province of Melanesia), 19% to the Catholic Church (Archdiocese of Honiara with two suffragan bishops), 38% to Protestant churches (especially the »South Seas Evangelical Church« [ 17%, Pentecostals], Seventh-day Adventists [11%], the “United Church in the Solomon Islands” [10%, Methodists]).
About 5% of the population are considered to be followers of traditional ethnic religious practices or of cargo cults. Baha’is and Buddhists are numerically very small religious groups.
Climate and vegetation
There is a tropical marine climate; Precipitation falls in all seasons, but especially in the period from November to April, on average 1,600–2,400 mm per year, locally up to 7,500 mm. The annual mean temperature is 26–27 ° C. Tropical rainforestcovers most of the islands, it turns into cloud forest from an altitude of more than 1,500 m above sea level; there are often mangrove forests on the coasts.
Conservation: The southern third of Rennell Island, a towering coral atoll with Lake Tegano (with 155 km 2 the largest lake in the South Pacific), was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1998.
