Israel Overview
Israel is a parliamentary republic in the Middle East, on the east coast of the Mediterranean. The capital is Jerusalem. Behind the coastal plain with a Mediterranean climate rises a dry mountainous country that slopes steeply in the east to the Jordan Rift valley with the Dead Sea. The south of Israel is taken over by the desert-like Negev. The population consists predominantly of Jews, three quarters of whom were born in Israel and a quarter immigrated from various countries of origin. The Islamic Arabs, the Palestinians, make up around 20% of the population of Israel. Israel sees itself as a Jewish state. Next to the Jewish religion and Islam, Christianity, Druze and the Baha’i religion are also officially recognized. Hebrew is the only official language of Israel; Arabic has a special status.
After the Second World War, the Zionist national movement and the effects of the Shoah in 1948, with the support of the United Nations, led to the establishment of the State of Israel. In the course of its history there have been repeated military clashes with neighboring Arab countries and the Palestinians (Middle East conflict). Israel occupies much of the Palestinian territories.
Israel has the highest standard of living in the Middle East and is a member of the OECD. The main focus of the industry is on export-oriented high-tech companies in the electronics, aviation and device manufacturing sectors. The economy is being strengthened by foreign investments, especially from the USA.
Egypt and Jordan are the only two neighboring Arab countries with which Israel has signed peace treaties. Above all, Israel feels threatened by Iran’s position of power in the region and is relying on US military aid. Israel has been a de facto nuclear weapons state since 1967.
Location
Israel borders the Mediterranean Sea to the west, Lebanon to the north, Syria to the extreme northeast, Jordan to the east and Egypt to the southwest . The southern tip extends to the Gulf of Aqaba of the Red Sea. Israel occupies parts of the West Bank and the Golan Heights. The Gaza Strip received full autonomy in 2005.
Israel lies in the transition area from the Mediterranean-winter-humid area to the year-round dry West Asian desert landscapes. The south of the country (south of Beersheba) is occupied by the arid Negev. It consists mainly of rocky mountains that are severely cut up by wadis. The north of the Negev is used by agriculture with the help of irrigation systems.
In the north of Israel, three landscape areas line up from west to east: coastal plain, mountainous region, and the Jordan Valley. The sandy coast is mostly straight and only swings inland in a bay near Haifa. The undulating coastal plain begins behind a strip of dunes and is only broken through at the Bay of Haifa by the Carmel Mountains. The coastal plain is up to 40 km wide in the south, and becomes narrower towards the north. The area tends to become swampy and was only converted into agricultural land through drainage.
The approximately 600–1000 m high mountainous region adjoining it to the east forms the three landscapes of Galilee, Samaria and Judea from north to south. However, only the highlands of Galilee with the highest mountain Har Meron (1 208 m above sea level) and the corridor from Tel Aviv-Jaffa to the high-altitude Jerusalem belong to the actual national territory of Israel. Fault lines divide the mountains into clumps and intrusion basins. The largest rift valley is the fertile plain of Jezreel between Galilee and Samaria, which connects the coast with the Jordan Valley. In the west of the mountainous country is a low hill country, the Shefela, in front of it. To the east, the mountains drop in steep fractures to the Jordan Rift.
The Jordan Rift is the northern extension of the East African rift system and is divided from north to south into the intensely used Hule Valley , south of the Sea of Galilee into the Jordan Valley and finally into the Wadi Araba , which stretches from the Dead Sea to the Gulf of Aqaba. The Sea of Galilee is the country’s main water reservoir, as the Dead Sea’s water cannot be used due to its extremely high salt content.
Climate
Israel has a Mediterranean climate, so it is a winter rain area. However, the Negev and large parts of the rift zone are extremely dry areas with annual rainfall below 250 mm; otherwise 500 mm (on the coast) to 900 mm (in the mountains) precipitation annually; the northern Jordan valley receives 400 mm per year. Average winter temperatures are 12–13 ° C on the coast (it is always frost-free) and 7–9 ° C in the mountains; the summer values are 22 ° C in the mountains, 24–26 ° C in the coastal plain and 28–34 ° C in the Jordan Valley; in late spring the temperature rises to over 45 ° C due to hot desert winds.
