Baseball

Baseball is one of the most popular sports in the United States (more than eleven million Americans play baseball according to the US Census Bureau). This is a team game played with a ball and bats (like English cricket or Russian rounders). The goal of the game is to score as many points as possible (runs, “runs”). Points are credited to the attacking team after the player returns to the “home” (home plate), having successively visited all three “bases” (base) – the corners of the “game square”. Each team consists of nine people and in each “part” of the game (inning, inning) consistently plays offense and defense. The match lasts nine innings, and in case of a draw – until the next inning ends with the advantage of one of the teams.

The ball on the baseball field is held by the defending team, it is served by the “pitcher” (pitcher, “throwing”) to the catcher (catcher, “catcher”), and the attacking player (batter, “batter”) tries to hit the ball, ideally – out of the playing field (home run, “home run”). If the batter hit the ball in the field, he runs to the first base (single), and with a very successful hit – to the second (double), third (triple) or immediately to the house (home run). The player who moved to the base is called the “runner” (runner), and the next offensive player takes the place of the batter.

The defending team always has nine players on the field: in addition to the pitcher and catcher, these are three players on the bases (baseman, “basemen”), three “outfielders” (outfielder) on areas of the field remote from home and a shortstop (shortstop), located between the second and third bases. The defense seeks to “neutralize” the offense by making it “out” (out). This can be achieved in several ways: to catch the ball beaten off by the batter before it falls to the ground (fly out, “fly out”); throw the ball that fell to the ground to the player defending the first (second, third) base earlier than the runner reaches it (ground out, “ground out”); three pitcher hits in the “strike zone”), limited in width by the “home base”, and in height – by the distance from the batter’s knees to the middle of his chest (strike out, “strike out”) etc. Having received an out, the attacking player leaves the field, after three outs the “half” of the inning ends and the teams change roles.

Of course, this is a very simplified presentation of the very basics of the game, but although the rules of baseball seem very confusing at first, it is not difficult to understand them.
