Frankfort

Frankfort [ frae ŋ kfət], capital of the state Kentucky, the Kentucky River, 27 400 residents; University; Whiskey production, electronic, textile industry; Trade center for the surrounding »bluegrass region« (tobacco, corn, horses).

Frankfort, founded in 1786, became the capital of Kentucky in 1792.

Louisville

Louisville [ lu ː ɪ sv ɪ l], largest city in Kentucky, USA, in the rapids of the Ohio; 248,800 residents (the metropolitan area has 1.16 million residents); catholic archbishop’s seat; several universities, derby, railway, art museum. The diverse industry includes the production of bourbon, cigarettes, canned meat, synthetic rubber, paints, varnishes, aluminum products and automobiles (Ford Motor Co.) as well as printing (including for the blind). Venue of the Kentucky Derby (annually in May since 1875), the most popular American horse race; international Airport.

Louisville was founded in 1778/79 and in 1780 after Louis XVI. named by France. It quickly developed into an important trading center and river port.

Lexington

Lexington [ leks ɪ ŋ tən], city in Kentucky, USA 266 800 residents; University of Kentucky (founded in 1865), Transylvania University (founded in 1780 as a seminary); important horse breeding center in the bluegrass region, trading center for tobacco and grass seeds; Food, electronics, automotive and paper goods industries.

Lexington was created in 1775 and was named after the battle near Lexington, Massachusetts.

Fifty States Kentucky Quarter Dollar

The Fifty States Kentucky Quarter Dollar coin features a racehorse (one of Kentucky’s official symbols) in front of Federal Hill Mansion in Bardstown. According to legend, it was this house (built in 1795) that inspired Stephen Foster to write the song “My Old Kentucky Home” (another symbol of the state).

The inscription on the coin reads “My Old Kentucky Home”.

America the Beautiful

One of the quarter dollar coins from the America the Beautiful series is dedicated to the Cumberland Gap National Historical Park, located in the state of Kentucky (as well as in the neighboring states of Virginia and Tennessee).

The coin depicts the pioneer looking west against the backdrop of the Cumberland Mountains.

The inscriptions on the coin read Cumberland Gap and First doorway to the West (“Cumberland Passage” and “First Way to the West”).
