Mississippi State Overview

Mississippi has a humid subtropical climate with long, hot summers and short, warm winters. In summer, the temperature is almost the same throughout the state, and in winter in the southern counties it is noticeably warmer. Like other Gulf Coast states, Mississippi is hit by tropical storms and hurricanes from time to time, often causing severe damage.

The state of Mississippi got its name from the greatest river of North America flowing through its territory, in turn called by Europeans a word borrowed from the Indians of the Ojibwe people and meaning “big river”. The first European explorer on the lands of the Mississippi was the Spanish pioneer Hernando de Soto, whose expedition passed through the northeastern part of the state in 1540. After the discoveries of the famous Frenchman René de La Salle, who descended in 1682 along the Mississippi from the Great Lakes to the Gulf of Mexico, France announced its claims to the region explored by him. In 1699, an expedition led by Pierre d’Iberville built the first European settlement on the lands of the Mississippi – Fort Mourepa, later known as “Old Biloxi”. Fort Rosalie was founded in 1716 by the French.

In 1763, after winning the French and Indian War, Great Britain received all the French colonies located east of the Mississippi River. After the end of the American Revolutionary War, under the terms of the peace treaty, the southern third of the modern state of Mississippi was transferred to Spain, and the rest of its territory became American and formally became part of Georgia. On April 7, 1798, the Mississippi Territory was created, which included the lands of the southern counties of Alabama and Mississippi. In 1802, Georgia relinquished its land claims to the United States federal government. After the Louisiana Purchase in 1804, the boundaries of the new territory were moved north to Tennessee.. In 1812, the United States annexed what had been left to the Spanish on the coast of the Gulf of Mexico. On December 10, 1817, Congress passed a resolution recognizing Mississippi as the twentieth state of the United States.

Now, about 160,000 people live in the capital and largest city of Mississippi, Jackson (and about 590,000 people in the urban agglomeration formed around it).
