Hawaii is a US state. Located on the Hawaiian Islands in the center of the Pacific Ocean in the Northern Hemisphere at a distance of 3700 km from the continental United States. The official language is English; partially (in everyday life) national languages are also preserved, including the Hawaiian language. The capital and largest city is Honolulu. Other major cities are Hilo, Kailua, Kaneohe. Oahu is the most economically developed island. The official nickname is the Aloha State.
The basis of the Hawaiian Islands is 8 islands in the southeastern part of the archipelago (central Pacific Ocean). From west to east, these are the islands: Niihau, Kauai, Oahu, Molokai, Lanai, Kahoolawe, Maui, and Hawaii. To avoid confusion in names, the last island – Hawaii (Hawaii) – is often called the Big Island (Big Island). Usually Hawaii is associated with these 8 large islands, largely because the remaining 124 islands in total have an area of \u200b\u200babout 8 square kilometers. The largest island of the archipelago – Hawaii (Big Island) has an area of 10,432 square kilometers.
STATE NAME
The name of the state of Hawaii comes from the Proto-Polynesian language, where the word hawai meant “homeland”, “father’s home”. In this sense, the word hawai is still used today in some languages of the peoples of Oceania, for example, in Samoa. In modern Hawaiian (which is the state language of Hawaii along with English), the word Hawaii is a proper name and does not carry any other meaning.
GEOGRAPHY
The state is located in the Hawaiian Islands in the central Pacific Ocean. The area is 28,311 km². On the island of Hawaii there are active volcanoes Mauna Loa and Kilauea, a dormant volcano Mauna Kea (height 4205 m).
CLIMATE
The climate of the Hawaiian Islands is tropical, although the temperature and humidity are less severe due to the almost constant trade winds blowing from the east. At the same time, climatic features differ significantly on each island. In fact, Hawaii only has 2 seasons: the dry season from May to October, and the rainy season from October to April. In winter, the temperature rarely drops below 18 C at night and stays around 28 C during the day. In summer, the temperature stays around 24 C at night and rises above 30 C during the day.
ECONOMY
The economy is based on tourism and services. The islands have many resorts, natural and historical attractions, including national parks that are part of the US National Park System. The main industries are: sugar and fruit-canning.
Agriculture. 1 million hectares are cultivated. The best lands are occupied by plantations of export crops: pineapples, sugar cane, coffee, sisal, bananas, guava. Macadamia nuts are also produced. Floriculture. The main consumer culture is rice. Animal husbandry is of secondary importance.
Hawaii is the most important transport hub of the North Pacific Ocean, through which the routes connecting the USA and Canada with East Asia, the Philippines, Australia, and New Zealand pass. Approximately 90% of Hawaii’s gross domestic product comes from services and tourism.
TOURISM
Hawaii is amazing exotic islands. A trip on them is a real find for travelers who want to get a lot of impressions. A favorable climate almost all year round, a high level of service, the ocean, magnificent sandy beaches, a diverse landscape, tropical vegetation – everything can be found here. Passive beach holidays can be combined with active ones: windsurfing, diving, spearfishing and fishing.
In Hawaii, the most comfortable time is from May to October, when there is the least chance of rainfall.
The official language is English. It is mainly used by the inhabitants of the Hawaiian Islands to communicate with each other. And the language of the indigenous people – Hawaiian – exists, in general, for the exotic. They love it, teach it in colleges, tell tourists about it, but in everyday life they use only a few words, and then very rarely.
Hawaii’s natural and varied scenery, warm tropical climate, and abundance of public sandy beaches and active volcanoes make it a popular destination for hikers, surfers, and scientists.
