Bolivia Overview

Bolivia is bordered by Brazil to the north and east, Paraguay and Argentina to the south, and Chile and Peru to the west.

The high mountains of the Andes in the west and the tropical lowlands in the east form the large natural areas. The Andes reach their greatest width in Bolivia. The western cordillera (in the Sajama volcano 6,542 m above sea level) and the eastern cordillera (Cordillera Real with Illampu 6,368 m above sea level), both glaciated, frame the vast Bolivian highlands ( Altiplano ), which are up to 200 km wide. This consists of a series of further, predominantly drainless basins (3,600–4,200 m above sea level), which are bordered by moderately high ridges or chains.

From Lake Titicaca, which drains over the Río Desaguadero to Lago de Poopó, the Altiplano becomes increasingly drier to the south.

The treeless highland steppe ( Puna ) gradually turns into a highland desert with salt pans ( Salar de Uyuni, Salar de Coipasa); the approximately 7,000 km 2 Eduardo Avaroa reserve is located in the far south-west of the country, among others. with flamingos and bizarre rock formations.

The broad eastern roof of the Andes, the Bolivian mountainous region, connects to the Eastern Cordillera. Due to the headwaters of the Amazon (Río Grande, Río Beni) and the La Plata system (Río Pilcomayo) it is deeply divided and, located in the rainwater of the southeast trade winds, heavily forested ( Yungas ). The tropical lowland, which takes up two thirds of the country and is between 300 and 400 m above sea level, is formed by the foothills of the Brazilian mountains at the height of Santa Cruz de la Sierra constricted; in the northern, hot and humid part it is covered by rainforest, in the middle, humid part of savannas with gallery forests (Llanos de Mojos) and in the southern, hot and humid part (Llanos de Chiquitos) by the bush of the Chaco Boreal, which leads to Paraguay. The Bolivian highlands between the Andes chains form the main settlement area. In the area of the Titicaca Basin, the cultivation zones for cultivated plants are particularly high (maize up to 3,500 m above sea level, potatoes and other tubers up to 4,100 m above sea level); pasture farming reaches up to 5,000 m above sea level. The Altiplano and the Bolivian mountains are rich in mineral resources (gold, silver, non-ferrous metals; including the Cerro Rico near Potosí ), the Andean rim zone in the southeast of crude oil and natural gas.
