Cameroon Overview
Cameroon, Republic in Central Africa, between the Gulf of Biafra and Lake Chad. The coastal plain bears tropical rainforest, the highlands in the interior wet savannah, in the north dry savannah. In the west rise volcanic mountains with the Cameroon Mountain (4,070 m). The population consists of Bantu and Sudan peoples. Although Cameroon has developed into a leading economic power in tropical Africa through the export of oil (since 1978), the majority of the population lives from agriculture. Cocoa, coffee, cotton, bananas and sugar cane are exported; The overseas port is Douala.
History: Cameroon was a German colony before the First World War, afterwards it was partly a French and partly a British mandate. The French part became an independent republic in 1960, to which the south of the formerly British part was annexed in 1961 (the north of the formerly British part has belonged to Nigeria since then).
