South Korea Overview

South Korea is a republic in the southern part of Korea with Seoul as its capital. The Korean War (1950–53) left a divided country. In it, South Korea and an armed force of the United Nations, mainly from the USA, fought against communist North Korea and the People’s Republic of China, allied with it. The border with North Korea near the 38th parallel has been heavily fortified and closely guarded since then.

Even today, South Korea is closely allied with the United States, which itself has armed forces stationed in the country. With North Korea there is only a ceasefire, no real peace. South Korean governments have been trying to improve political relations since the 1990s. So far they have not had a resounding success. With Japan, there are repeated disputes about its responsibility as colonial ruler over Korea from 1910 to the end of the Second World War (1945).

South Korea is surrounded by the sea on three sides. The coast is a total of 2400 km long. In the south and west there are 3,500 islands in front of it. Mountains cut through the country from east to southwest. Most of the major rivers flow into the western coastal lowlands. Most of the people live there too. The climate is cool-temperate, subtropical in the south.

The population consists almost entirely of Koreans. South Korea has twice as many residents as North Korea. About half live in the capital region. Coexistence is shaped by the teachings of Confucius. This means that conflicts should be avoided and age should be respected. A good education is also very important. In addition to school, children and young people therefore often receive additional lessons. Christianity has gained a foothold in Korea since the 19th century. However, more than half of South Koreans do not belong to any religious community.

South Korea has developed from an agricultural country to a modern industrial state since the 1960s. World famous companies are Samsung, Hyundai and LG. They sell electronics, including smartphones, cars, and ships. The largest trading partner is China.

South Korea has been a democracy since 1987, headed by a five-year president.
