History of Nevada
As in other regions of the North American continent, the territory of the modern state of Nevada has been inhabited for thousands of years by indigenous people – the American Indians.
It is believed that the first European explorer of Nevada was the Spanish missionary Francisco Garces, who organized a series of expeditions in the seventies of the XVIII century. The lands of Nevada then belonged to Spain, and later to Mexico.
The first American to explore the territory of Nevada (namely, the Las Vegas Valley region) was Jedediah Smith in 1827.
In 1848, after the end of the Mexican–American War, Nevada became part of the United States of America, still part of the Utah Territory.
The first permanent settlements were established in Nevada by Mormons in the early fifties of the 19th century, but the real development of the state began only after the discovery in 1859 of silver deposits, known as the Comstock vein.
A wave of migrant prospectors poured into Nevada, and the first mining town, Virginia City, instantly grew. The population of the city during the “silver boom in Nevada” exceeded thirty thousand residents, it was called in those years “the richest city in America.”
It was in the city newspaper of Virginia City that the story “Letter from Carson” was published in 1863, signed by the later famous name – Mark Twain. The “Nevada” period of the writer’s life is described by him in his autobiographical book “Light”.
In 1864, Nevada officially gained independence, becoming the thirty-sixth state of the United States.
