Turkey Overview
The Turkey is a country in southeastern Europe with (2018) 82.3 million residents; The capital is Ankara.
Population and Religion
Turkey has 83.3 million residents (2018). The population has increased almost eightfold since the end of the First World War. One million residents are added every year. More children are born in the country than in the city. Many Turks move to the cities in the west because there is work there. There is a large income gap between urban and rural populations and between the west and east of the country. 14.7 million live in Istanbul , the metropolis has more residents than Belgium(11.4 million).
In the cities, people mainly work in industry, in rural regions in small to medium-sized farms. 70-75% of the population are Turks, about 20% are Kurds with their own culture, language and social structures. Most of the tribe live in the south-east of the country. The Kurds are not recognized as a national minority. The official language is Turkish; in addition to Kurdish, other languages are spoken by small groups such as Circassians, Lasen, Bulgarians, Georgians and Armenians. Since 2011, 3.6 million refugees have fled the Syrian civil war to Turkey. Many Turks are skeptical about their integration into Turkish society.
Three quarters of the Turks are Sunni Muslims and one fifth are Alevis. Small Jewish and Christian groups live in Istanbul. Ethnic or religious minorities such as the Yazidis are often disadvantaged in Turkey. Minority languages are or were forbidden. Women have been legally equal to men since the state was founded in 1923. However, they are disadvantaged in numerous respects. They play a subordinate role in society, the economy and politics. Violence against women is widespread and rarely prosecuted by the authorities. At the time of the economic boom in Turkey in the 2000s, many Turks who emigrated to Germany returned to their country of origin.
