United Arab Emirates Overview
United Arab Emirates, abbreviation UAE, federal association of seven autonomous sheikdoms (Emirates) on the Arabian Peninsula. The individual emirates are: Abu Dhabi (73,060 km 2 with 2.45 million E), Dubai (3,900 km 2 with 1.2 million E), Sharja (Sharjah; 2,600 km 2 with 946,000 E), Ras al-Khaima (1,700 km 2 with 263,000 E), Fujaira (Fudjaira; 1,300 km 2 with 118,000 E), Umm al-Kaiwain (780 km 2 with 62,000 E) and Ajman (Ajman; 260 km 2 with 235,000 E).
The state lies on the south coast of the Persian Gulf (“Pirate Coast”). The most important branch of the economy is oil production (especially in Abu Dhabi).
History: In the area of the United Arab Emirates already existed in the 3rd millennium BC. Important trading centers. The Islamization of the area began during Muhammad’s lifetime. Since 1760 it has been under British influence, since 1853 as “Pacified Oman” under British sovereignty. In 1971 the Emirates gained independence and merged to form the United Arab Emirates. Population
As citizens, native Arabs who work in the public service, as managers of their own businesses and as guarantors (“sponsors”) for foreign traders (foreigners are not allowed to own property or companies), form only a minority within the population (according to differing estimates between 11 and 15%).
Some nomads and settled farmers still live in the poorer emirates. The foreign workers (two thirds men without families) come mainly from India, Pakistan and other South and East Asian countries as well as from Arab countries bordering the Mediterranean. In addition, specialists from the USA and Europe (especially from Great Britain) work in the Emirates. The average population density (2017) is 117 residents / km 2 , but only about 1% of the country’s area is populated. With a degree of urbanization of 86%, the population is concentrated in the major port and emirate capitals.
Comprehensive and sophisticated healthcare is free for citizens.
Religion
The constitution defines Islam as the official religion, whereby the right to freely practice religion is not guaranteed by Islamic beliefs. The ruling houses emphasize their traditional ties to Sunni Islam.
About 76% of the total population, including all citizens, profess Islam. Around 85% of citizens are Sunnis from the Maliki and Hanbali schools of law , around 15% are Shiites (Imamites).
Significant religious minorities are Hindus and Buddhists (together about 9-15% of the population, mostly Hindus) and Christians (about 9-13% of the population). The majority of Christians belong to the Catholic Church (Apostolic Vicariate Southern Arabia [seat: Abu Dhabi]), the rest of the various Eastern Churches and the Anglican Church (Province of Jerusalem and Middle East); few Protestants.
