Mississippi is a southeastern US state located in the Gulf Coast region. It has a total of 82 counties and 146 school districts. Hinds County is the most populous county in Mississippi with over 245,000 residents. DeSoto County is the second most populous with over 180,000 residents. Jackson is the largest city in Mississippi with over 175,000 people living within its boundaries. Other large school districts include DeSoto County School District which serves about 41,500 students mainly from DeSoto County but also from Marshall and Tate Counties, and Gulfport School District which serves about 11,500 students mainly from Harrison County but also from Hancock and Stone Counties. Each of these larger school districts are further divided into smaller sub-districts for more localized educational services for students living within their boundaries.
