Connecticut Recent History
In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Connecticut, with its developed industry and a very high need for labor, rushed thousands of emigrants from Europe, among whom were many Italians and Poles. In the former almost 100% Protestant state, the number of Catholics and Jews increased dramatically. In 1910, about 30% of Connecticut ‘s population were immigrants.
During World War I, the manufacture of arms and ammunition remained a major industry in Connecticut’s economy. Having survived the crisis of the Great Depression, during the Second World War, the state once again confirmed its proud nickname “Arsenal of Democracy”. The military industry continued to develop in Connecticut in the postwar years, it was here, at the shipyards of Groton, that the world’s first nuclear submarine was built, and in Stratford there is a helicopter plant founded in the thirties of the XX century by an emigrant from Russia, Igor Sikorsky.
With the end of the Cold War, the importance of the defense industry declined sharply. Although numerous plants and factories in Connecticut continue to carry out military orders, they are no longer decisive for the state. More important have become financial companies (especially those working in the insurance industry), education (one of the prestigious Ivy League universities, Yale, is located in New Haven). The number of tourists coming to Connecticut has increased significantly, especially after the opening of two casinos owned by Indian peoples in the nineties of the last century.
