Early History of Kansas
In 1806, Zebulon Pike’s expedition passed across the prairies of Kansas and Nebraska west to the headwaters of the Arkansas River and the Colorado Rockies . Pike wrote about the arid steppes in the western Great Plains, that in time they could become similar to the sandy deserts of Africa. On the map that Zebulon Pike made during his journey, he made notes “not a piece of wood” and “countless herds of buffalo.”
Similar was the description of the boundless steppes given by topographer Stephen Long, who explored the Great Plains in the early twenties of the 19th century. It was he who first called this region the “Great Desert”, later this nickname was transformed into the well-known expression “The Great American Desert”.
Kansas was an unorganized territory from the time of the purchase of Louisiana by the United States, then from 1812 to 1821 it was part of the Missouri Territory, and after the formation of the state of Missouri again lost any administrative status. The prevailing opinion about the prairies of Kansas, as lifeless and unsuitable for agriculture, influenced the decision of the US government to resettle Indian tribes in Kansas. The Kanza and Osage peoples were evicted south to Oklahoma, and the Shawnee Indians (from Ohio), Lenny Lenape (from New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania), Sock and Fox (from Wisconsin), Potawatomi and Huron (from Michigan), the Kickapoo (from Illinois), and others.
In 1821, William Becknell paved the route of the Santa Fe Trail through Kansas, along which trade caravans from Missouri to New Mexico went until the 1880s and played a huge role in the development of the southwestern United States. To guard trade routes, Fort Leavenworth, the oldest active military installation in the United States of America west of Washington, was established in northeast Kansas in 1827. In the thirties of the XIX century, the “Oregon Trail” also ran through Kansas, along which thousands of immigrants walked and rode to the northwest of the United States.
