Population of Maryland
About 5,850,000 people live in the state of Maryland (nineteenth most populous among the states of the USA. Maryland is one of the most densely populated states, the average population density here is about 230 people per km 2 (fifth place in the USA).
The state’s largest city is Baltimore, with about 620,000 people (twenty-fourth largest city in the United States). Maryland’s other major cities are Frederick (over 65,000 people), Rockville (over 60,000 people), Gaithersburg (about 60,000 people), and Bowie (about 55,000 people). The state capital, Annapolis, has about 40,000 residents. Due to the peculiarities of nature and history, most of the cities of Maryland are concentrated in the central part of the state, the eastern and western counties are more “rural”.
Maryland’s largest metropolitan area (approximately 2,730,000, number 20 on the list of U.S. metropolitan areas) formed around Baltimore. Western Maryland’s largest city, Hagerstown, became the center of a cluster of communities with a total population of about 270,000 people, which also included the cities of neighboring West Virginia. Several settlements in the northeast of the state are included in the metropolis of Philadelphia (Pennsylvania), and in the south – in the agglomeration of the capital of the United States of America, Washington.
