Economy of South Carolina
Until the middle of the 20th century, South Carolina ‘s economy was based almost entirely on agriculture (with cotton as the main crop) and on the processing of its products. Industrial production was represented only by numerous textile factories and sawmills. The state cannot boast of mineral reserves; only sand, gravel and some other building materials are mined here.
In recent decades, the state’s economy has become much more diversified, along with the rapid growth of industry, the service sector, education, transportation (the port of Charleston is one of the largest on the east coast of the United States of America), and agriculture is no longer focused on one culture. Tourism plays an increasingly important role in the economy of the Palm State.
Modern South Carolina is characterized by a wide variety of manufactured industrial products, and in recent years, more and more factories have been opened in the state.
The North American divisions of the well-known tire manufacturer Michelin and the automobile company BMW, the repair base of Lockheed Martin, and a large plant for the production of General Electric turbines are concentrated in the Greenville area. North Charleston is home to Boeing ‘s fuselage assembly plant, the large Kapstone pulp and paper mill, and Aerobearings, a jet engine bearing plant. The state has enterprises for the production of Caterpillar and Tognum engines, the assembly of Daimler vans, producing equipment for the aerospace industry and various Honeywell consumer products and many others.
In South Carolina, thanks to its fertile soils and mild climate, agriculture is well developed. Traditionally, the state is one of the leading tobacco producers in the United States, in addition, cotton, soybeans, corn, wheat, sweet potatoes, tomatoes, peanuts, pecans and many other crops are grown in the fields and orchards of the Palm State.
Animal husbandry is also well developed, primarily poultry farming (turkeys and chickens), as well as cattle and pig breeding. Fishing and seafood (blue crabs and shrimp) are caught on the coast.
South Carolina is famous for its peaches, it ranks second (after California) among the US states in terms of their production.
